There are eight different kinds of modern hives: Langstroth, National, Commercial, WBC, Dartington Long Deep, Beehaus, Top-bar and Warré.
I will discuss the pros and cons of each of them, but first here is a lovely video on English gardening in Chicago, my home away from home.
Can I just say that the photo in your header is GORGEOUS? If that is your garden…wow. Wouldn’t I love to wake up every morning to that!
I wish it were my garden! It’s a garden designed by Chris Beardshaw at the Chelsea Flower Show.

I posted this back in January, but it is a nice companion to yesterday’s post on the English Walled Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
Can you believe I live so near Chicago and have never been to the Chicago Botanic Gardens? After viewing your video I will have to made it a must do this summer. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I was wondering about the header image too – it looks like the quintessential English summer house. Loved the video, I will have to make a point to visit this garden.
The header image is a garden designed by Chris Beardshaw and featured at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show. It’s what I want my own garden to look like eventually!! 🙂
